Twitter service was disrupted as of Thursday mid-morning, Twitter confirmed. The outage had been earlier observed by many users and a third-party service monitoring website.

Twitter posted an update to its service status webpage, separate from the main Twitter site, at approximately 11:45 a.m. ET acknowledging the problem:   “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

As of 12:23 p.m. ET, Twitter service was still down, and the website was displaying the following generic error message:

We’ve reached out to Twitter for more information and will update as we receive it. The outage came on the heels of a massive Google Talk or “Gchat” outage earlier in the morning.

The last time Twitter went down, it did so for hours, just over a month ago, on June 21st, which the company said was caused by a cascading bug, or a software error that quickly spins out of control and causes errors in other areas of the program.
