Twitter on Tuesday released substantial updates to its official iPhone and Android smartphone apps, mirroring the company’s overall push toward “consistency” across all of the places one can access Twitter. The updates include:

  • Expanded Tweets: The same feature that Twitter introduced in June enabling tweets of links to news and other online articles to display a short introductory paragraph and image or video associated with the article, pushing Twitter beyond its 140-character-count-per-tweet limit.
  • An “enhanced” experience for live events, say sports games, in which Twitter will select the best images and/or tweets about the event and present those first.
  • The updated search features, including autocomplete, which Twitter unveiled for the desktop on Friday
  • Push notifications
