Turkey has announced that it will begin a military drill on Wednesday along the Syrian border, aimed at discouraging growing Kurdish unity in northern Syrian towns. The Kurdish rebels, collaborating with Syria’s Kurdish-majority Democratic Union Party, have taken over five separate towns in northern Syria, which Turkey believes could morph into a safe haven for Kurdish separatists.
The drill will consist of 25 tanks performing high-speed maneuvers just kilometers from the border. On Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan reiterated that his country would not permit threats localized along its southern border. “We will never tolerate initiatives that would threaten Turkey’s security,” Erdogan said Tuesday.
