President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening downplayed the large crowds that have been showing up to Republican lawmakers’ town halls, saying that the constituents are often just “liberal activists.”

Home in their states for the week, Republican members of Congress have faced large crowds, tough questions and protests. The Utah Republican Party even urged lawmakers not to hold town halls due to concern about “acts of intimidation and violence.” A Republican congressman in Minnesota also threatened to cancel an upcoming town hall if protesters turn the event into a “disruptive display.”
