During a heated exchange on crime in the United States during the first presidential debate, Donald Trump accused undocumented immigrants in the United States of being part of gangs that “rove the street.”

“They have guns and they shoot people,” Trump said.

“We have gangs roving the street. In many cases they’re illegally here, illegal immigrants, they have guns and they shoot people,” Trump said. “We have to be very strong. We have to be very vigilant. We have to, we have to know what we’re doing.”

Since the beginning of his presidential campaign, Trump has often accused undocumented immigrants of being criminals. At every turn of his campaign – even when he attempted to soften his position on immigration – Trump has discussed at length horrendous crimes perpetrated by immigrants who were in the country illegally.
