Tom Tancredo, the Republican border hawk who’s running for governor of Colorado, was dismissive Wednesday of the notion that his party will draw a benefit from passing legislation to reform the nation’s immigration system.

Tancredo, the former congressman who also launched a quixotic presidential bid during the 2008 cycle, told the National Journal that he can’t believe Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) or any of the other Republicans leading the reform effort could be so naive to believe the legislation will help the GOP politically.

“Who believes this sh*t? Who in the world falls for this? So the question is, why are you doing this? You can’t be that stupid. I don’t believe Rubio is naive. So if you’re not naive, what is it? Duplicitous? For what purpose? Maybe you feel you have a niche that you’re going to try to get in for a presidential campaign,” Tancredo said. “The idea that they’re doing anything that would benefit Republicans in the long run is ludicrous. Hispanics vote for Democrats for exactly the same reason that other people vote for Democrats: They want ObamaPhones! They want big government! It’s got nothing to do with immigration!”
