Longtime NBC News correspondent Tom Brokaw was diagnosed with cancer in August, NBC announced Tuesday.
Brokaw has been undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic for multiple myeloma, which affects the blood cells in bone marrow. Physicians are “very encouraged” with his progress so far, according to NBC.
“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” Brokaw said in a statement released Tuesday. “I remain the luckiest guy I know.”
Brokaw asked to keep details about his condition private.
“I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter,” he said.
Brokaw continues to report for NBC News and has been helping with the network’s coverage of the Sochi Winter Olympics.
