Three U.S. Naval Academy football players are under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a female midshipmen nearly a year ago.

The news comes just a week after President Barack Obama delivered the academy’s commencement address and touched on the problem of sexual assault in the military, saying such crimes “threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong.”

CNN reports that the three athletes were accused of the alleged incident in April 2012. The woman eventually dropped the complaint but later reinstated it.

An attorney for the unidentified woman said she became intoxicated at a “football house” and woke up the next morning with little recollection of the previous night. She learned through social media and friends that three men claimed to have had sex with her.

When she reported the incident she was disciplined for drinking and no action was taken against the athletes, according to CNN.

Recent reports show the rate of sexual assaults within the military on the rise.
