Tesla Nonprofit Buys Old Lab After $1.4M Crowdfunding Campaign

The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, a nonprofit organization founded to turn Tesla’s old abandoned laboratory in Shoreham, New York, into the first U.S. museum dedicated to the inventor, has signed a letter of intent to purchase the property and the sale should close in early 2013, according to Newsday.

The nonprofit raised the money to purchae the site, nearly $1.4 million plus a state grant, through an online crowdfunding campaign on the website IndieGoGo. The campaign was backed by Matt Inman, creator of the popular Internet comic The Oatmeal, who heavily promoted the effort on his website and to his social media followers. As Inman tweeted Monday:
