Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) warned Republican voters would “revolt” if party insiders plotting a convention floor coup brought in a “white knight” to block both him and frontrunner Donald Trump from the presidential nomination.
Ahead of a Monday town hall in Madison, Cruz called the notion of bringing in a Republican not currently running for President to grab the party’s nomination a “pipe dream.”
“This fevered pipe dream of Washington, that at the convention they will parachute in some white knight who will save the Washington establishment, it is nothing less than a pipe dream,” Cruz said.
“It ain’t gonna happen,” he continued. “If it did, the people would quite rightly revolt.”
He also cautioned that voters would stay home in November if their candidate was spurned.
The sentiment was a somewhat softer take than earlier remarks by Trump, who said “I think you’d have riots” if he arrived at the summer convention in Cleveland short of the magic number of delegates needed and didn’t get the nomination.
