Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) argued Sunday that rival Donald Trump criticized his wife, Heidi, because Trump was “scared” to debate foreign policy issues.

“Attacking spouses and children is off-limits. It has no place in politics,” Cruz said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Trump tweeted about an anti-Trump ad that used a photo of Melania from a GQ photo shoot and threatened to “spill the beans” on Heidi. Cruz responded on Twitter that his camp didn’t have anything to do with the ad. The next day, Trump retweeted a meme with an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz side by side with a more flattering photo of his wife.

Cruz then told Trump to leave Heidi “the hell alone” — a threat he seemed to reiterate on Sunday.

“And sadly, what Donald has done, when he gets scared — listen, particularly on foreign policy, Donald is out of his depth, he doesn’t know,” Cruz said. “He doesn’t understand these issues.”
