Democrats called out Donald Trump’s sloppy diplomatic warm-up trip to Mexico, saying Trump “choked” on the international stage when he told reporters that he didn’t talk with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about who would pay for the border wall.

Peña Nieton claims he told Trump flatly he wouldn’t be writing a check for it.

“Donald Trump has made his outlandish policy of forcing Mexico to pay for his giant wall the centerpiece of his campaign. But at the first opportunity to make good on his offensive campaign promises, Trump choked,” said Hillary for American chair John Podesta. “What we saw today from a man who claims to be the ultimate ‘deal maker’ is that he doesn’t have the courage to advocate for his campaign promises when he’s not in front of a friendly crowd. We know who he is. “

The DNC’s national press secretary, Mark Paustenbach, said in a release that “Donald got rolled.”

“Today in his Mexico press conference, Donald Trump lied about discussing how to pay for his wall with the Mexican president. Trump has boasted for months that he is going to get Mexico to pay for his ridiculous wall but when he came face to face with the Mexican President he got out maneuvered and then tried to cover it up on worldwide TV. Simply put, Donald got rolled,” Paustenbach said.

Vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine also criticized Trump’s brief trip abroad during his appearance on Good Morning America Thursday.

“I think it was kind of a diplomatic embarrassment,” Kaine said on the program, according to a report from Yahoo News. “He’s been talking for a year about we’re going to build a wall and Mexico is going to pay for it and then he goes and he sits down and goes eyeball to eyeball with the president of Mexico and, what, he forgets suddenly to bring it up or he’s too afraid to bring it up or he chokes in the meeting.”
