The Reno Gazette-Journal identified the teacher shot and killed at a Nevada middle school Monday morning as Michael Landsberry.
The shooting at Sparks Middle School left two people dead and two injured.
Landsberry taught eighth grade math at the middle school and was in the Nevada Army National Guard. Officials and friends are calling him a hero.
“To hear he was trying to protect those kids doesn’t surprise me at all,” said Chanda Landsberry, Michael’s sister-in-law told the Gazette-Journal. “He could have ducked and hid, but he didn’t. That’s not who he is.”
The status of the two students who were hospitalized after the shooting have been upgraded. One is now in fair condition, and the other is now in serious condition — both had previously been in critical condition.
The suspected shooter, who is also a student, is dead. Law enforcement has not confirmed wheather his death was a suicide, according to the AP. Officials said that no shots were fired by law enforcement.
One eye witness said he saw a student shoot a teacher outside of the school.
The next press conference will take place at 4 p.m. PT.
