The Syrian Government has accepted a peace proposal put forwarded by UN and Arab League Special Envoy Kofi Annan according to Annan’s spokesperson. The former UN Secretary General’s plan consists of a cease fire supervised by a UN peackeepers. Annan was encouraged by the news calling it an:
“an important initial step that could bring an end to the violence and the bloodshed”
Syrian opposition led by the Syrian National Council was critical of the plan, maintaining that they would not negotiate with the Assad government until all violence comes to an end. There is also concern due to previous broken commitments by the Syrian government.
