Syrian forces and pro-government groups have reportedly killed dozens of civilians in a village outside Hama, according to both activist and watchdog networks working within the country. Syria’s Local Coordination Committees and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that more than 86 civilians died in the village of al-Qubayr.
In response to the killings, the opposition Syrian National Council called on fighters aligned with the anti-government Free Syrian Army to “escalate battlefield action.” The Assad government has denied any involvement, though it released a statement saying that “a terrorist group committed a heinous crime in the Hama region which claimed nine lives.”
