Capitol Hill police were investigating a suspicious envelope that was found Wednesday morning on the third floor of the Russell Senate Office Building and a suspicious package found in the second floor atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building, TPM has confirmed.
Todd Mattingly, a specialist for the Capitol Hill police, said that the floors of both buildings had been evacuated as a “precautionary measure.” Staff members and visitors remained on the other floors, he said.
Mattingly said the contents of both the envelope and the package have not been “tested or opened or examined yet.” But he could not confirm if the suspicious envelope in the Russell building was found in the office of Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), which has has been reported by multiple media outlets.
