The doctor who was shot at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Tuesday morning has died, according to the Boston Police.

The suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an examination room following the shooting.

Police identified the victim as Michael Wellsley, a doctor at the hospital’s cardiovascular center.

“Dr. Davidson was a wonderful and inspiring bright light and an outstanding cardiac surgeon who devoted his career to saving lives and improving the quality of life of every patient he cared for,” Brigham and Women’s Hospital President Dr. Elizabeth Nabel said in a statement Tuesday night, according to the Boston Globe. “It is truly devastating that his own life was taken in this horrible manner.”

The suspect, identified by police as Stephen Pasceri, entered the hospital Tuesday morning and asked for Wellsley by name. Police are investigating the gunman’s motive.

“He was targeted and that reason right now is unclear,” Police Commissioner William Evans said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to ABC News. “There was something in the past that upset this guy.”

Although the police said the hospital was not locked down, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital said the cardiovascular facility was locked down following the shooting.

“There has been a shooting in the Shapiro building (70 Francis Street), and the suspect has been apprehended. The Shapiro Center has been locked down, and all staff are asked to remain in place. More information will be shared as it becomes available,” the hospital said in a statement, according to the Boston Globe.
