The State Department claims a Marie Claire interview with Hillary Clinton mischaracterizes a quote from the secretary of state as a jab at her former colleague, Anne-Marie Slaughter.
“I can’t stand whining,” Clinton is quoted as saying in the article, after a paragraph going over Slaughter’s Atlantic magazine story explaining her decision to leave the State Department after struggling to find an acceptable work-life balance.
State Department spokesman Philippe Reines tells The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple that Clinton was referring to “The Catcher in the Rye,” not Slaughter.
