White House economic adviser Gene Sperling on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday used an analogy about a mugging to combat the idea that sequestration was President Obama’s idea.

A mugger comes up to you and says, “Give me your wallet.” You say, “I don’t have my wallet, but here’s my watch.” Well, technically giving your watch was your idea, but it doesn’t really tell the whole story.

Sperling gave credit for the analogy to its original author, New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait.
