The rain that poured down on South Carolina for several days beginning over the weekend left thousands without water, homes destroyed, and at least nine people dead.

On Sunday, 16.6 inches of rain reportedly fell in one part of the state. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called it the kind of storm that one sees once in 1,000 years.

The weather forecast has since improved, but Associated Press photos from the wreckage, such as the one above of a church submerged in water, offer insight into the amount of damage the storm left in its wake.

Here are some other AP photos taken Tuesday from the state:

Water pours from a gate in the Lake Murray dam in Columbia, South Carolina.

Flooding washes a road away.

Floodwater rushes just beneath a highway.

Water surrounds cars parked behind a home.

A canal breaks.

A building is left in shambles from floodwaters.
