Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) will seek reelection, a Cochran spokesman confirmed Friday.
Cochran had been weighing whether to run for another term. Mississippi state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R) is the primary tea party challenger running against Cochran. A number of other Republican lawmakers in the state said they would jump into the race if Cochran decided to retire.
“Sen. Cochran has had a long and distinguished career representing the people of Mississippi,” McDaniel said in response to Cochran’s announcement. “I look forward to a positive campaign based on the future of our state, our country and the Republican Party. As a strong conservative, I will fight to bring those values to Washington.”
