The White House on Wednesday condemned attacks in London and pledged the United States’ “full support” to the British government.
“We obviously condemn today’s attack in Westminster, which the United Kingdom is treating as an act of terrorism,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said at his daily briefing. “We applaud the quick response that the British police and their first responders made to the situation. The victims in this are in our thoughts and our prayers.”
Spicer said that President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation and spoke to British Prime Minister Theresa May.
“The city of London and Her Majesty’s government have the full support of the U.S. government in responding to the attack and bringing those to justice who are responsible,” he said.
A knife-wielding assailant was shot by police after stabbing an officer outside Britain’s Parliament. Around the same time a vehicle ran into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing at least one woman and leaving several other people injured.
Scotland Yard said Wednesday that it was treating the attacks as terrorism until they know otherwise.
In remarks earlier Wednesday, Trump described the attacks as “some big news.”
