SCOTUSblog, a website that offers real-time news and analysis of Supreme Court proceedings, has won a Peabody Award for its coverage of the court, the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism announced Wednesday.

The site “is a treasure trove mostly of text – archival material, updates, analysis – about the daily and historic workings of the Supreme Court,” a written release announcing the award said.

After stepping out from the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Defense of Marriage Act, SCOTUSblog publisher Tom Goldstein told TPM he and the team are thrilled to receive the recognition.

“We’re blown away and humbled to be recognized in this way and in the community of journalists who we admire and respect so deeply,” he wrote in an email. “We hope this is a good sign for the recognition of blogging’s contribution to public understanding.”

SCOTUSblog’s audience exploded last year during its coverage of the Supreme Court’s ruling on President Obama’s health care reform. In June 2012, Goldstein told TPM the site was “nothing but incredibly appreciative” of the traffic bump.

“The court is so bad at conveying information about what it’s doing, if someone can helpfully step in in a way that’s free and accessible, people really appreciate it,” Goldstein said then.

SCOTUSblog has been covering this week’s Supreme Court hearings on gay rights cases.
