Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), a leading Gang of Eight member who helped shepherd a comprehensive immigration reform bill through the Senate earlier this year, said Wednesday that a piecemeal approach to the issue advocated by many Republicans in the House would be an acceptable path forward.

“We would prefer a big comprehensive bill but any way the House can get there is okay by us. I’m optimistic we’ll get it done,” he said on CNN’s “New Day” program.

Should the House break up the reform effort into multiple bills, Schumer suggested that lawmakers could eventually bundle them together later in the conference process.

“If they pass individual smaller bills they will get agglomerated. I’m not dictating to the House what to do,” he said.
