At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun violence Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he believes legislation to institute universal background checks for gun purchases has “a good chance of passing.” The senior senator from New York said universal background checks are a “proven, effective” method to mitigating gun violence.

“For the last several years, my focus has been on gun ownership and background checks,” Schumer said during his opening remarks. “Universal background checks is a proven, effective step we can take to reduce gun violence. And I believe it has a good chance of passing.”
