Asked about his support of Arlen Specter’s presidential run in 1996 on ABC’s This Week, Rick Santorum said it was a part of his past that he regrets. When Jonathan Karl questioned the former Pennsylvania Senator on why he supported a candidate who was pro-choice, Santorum’s response sounded a little bit like his notorious team-player comment in February, when he explained his vote for No Child Left Behind by saying that “politics is a team sport.”
Well, you know, when your colleague is running for office, and you know, I was his colleague in the United States Senate. He asked me to stand with him. That certainly was not one of my prouder moments I look back on. But look, you know, you work together as a team for the state of Pennsylvania. And I felt that Senator Specter had stood up and supported me when I was running in 1994, and I did likewise.
Santorum added that “when I was standing up behind Arlen Specter, Mitt Romney was pro-choice. Mitt Romney was giving money to Planned Parenthood.”
