Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum officially suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Wednesday and endorsed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for the presidency.

“We are suspending our campaign,” Santorum said on Fox News after reports swirled Wednesday of his intentions.

Santorum called Rubio a “tremendously gifted young man” who is focused on the issues he believes in — helping the middle class and understanding the threat of “fundamentalists Islam.”

Santorum said he doesn’t “endorse lightly.”

“(Rubio) is a born leader and someone I just feel a lot of confidence in that he is — he is the new generation and someone that can bring this country together, not just moderates and conservatives but young and old,” Santorum said.
