The gunman who killed five people last week in Santa Monica, Calif. carried a huge amount of ammunition that was strapped to his body or kept in pouches on his clothing, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Citing sources familiar with the investigation into the shooting rampage, the report indicated that 23-year-old John Zawahri carried roughly 40 magazines, which each had the capacity to hold 30 bullets. Although authorities don’t have an official number, they told the Times that they believe Zawahri likely used more than 1,000 rounds.
