House Foreign Relations subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Chairman Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz. talks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, after a closed-door GOP meeting on President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration. Obama's directives in November gave temporary relief from deportation to about 4 million immigrants in the country illegally, along with permits allowing them to work legally in the U.S. His move infuriated Republicans after their midterm election victories, and they vowed to retaliate once they assumed full control of Congress this week. A co-founder of the hardline House Freedom Caucus on Wednesday compared Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) to a maid who refuses to clean floors and make beds.

Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) told The Hill that the conditions Ryan said would be necessary for him to jump into the House speaker’s race — including pledges of support from three influential House GOP caucuses and a guarantee of time off to spend with his wife and three young children—were “rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.” Salmon appeared to take umbrage in particular with Ryan’s desire to keep family time sacred.

“It’s like interviewing a maid for a job and she says, ‘I don’t clean windows, I don’t do floors, I don’t do beds, these are the hours I’ll work,’” he told the publication. Salmon said something similar Wednesday to TPM.

Other conservative hardliners said they took issue with Ryan’s call for the chamber to tweak the rules surrounding the motion to vacate the speaker’s chair or didn’t like his stance on immigration reform. Freedom Caucus members have said the Wisconsin Republican will need four-fifths of their votes to earn the group’s endorsement, which Ryan has made a condition of his run for speaker.

  2. That’s really smart, dude. Compare him to a minimum-wage menial worker. Presto! You’ve managed to insult BOTH Lyin’ Ryan AND working-class domestics. A two-fer!

  3. I remember, in Driving Miss Daisy, what Idella said to Boolie when Boolie criticized Idella for using an old-fashioned carpet sweeper instead of the new electric vacuum he had bought her.

“You come here to clean, and I’ll go down and run your office.”

  4. Let’s see. 42 members of the FREEDOM! Caucus and 42 complaints on different ‘demands’…I guess Paul won’t be the next Speaker…
