Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union, on Wednesday said legislation that would prevent mass shootings deserves a vote in Congress, but he doesn’t believe President Obama’s policies would do that.
“The problem is that everything the President is proposing would do nothing to have prevented what happened in Newtown and would do nothing to prevent further violence in the future,” Rubio said on “CBS This Morning.”
Rubio added that gun laws are only followed by law-abiding citizens, not criminals. He said he expects the Senate to vote on gun control measures, but insisted that proposals on the table infringe on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.
“If they want to change the Second Amendment, if they want to change America’s gun laws, then that’s fine. Say that’s what you want to do, and let’s have a debate about it,” Rubio said.
