On a conference call with reporters this morning the former NH governor and major Romney surrogate John Sununu repeatedly warned of an “October surprise” if Newt should be the Republican nominee.

Sununu repeatedly warned this would be to do with the former Speaker’s “ethics” problem. He referenced how Nancy Pelosi said there was plenty of material to come out on Newt over the ethics fine he was subjected to in the late 90s. At the time Pelosi complained that she was taken out of context, that there wasn’t anything new hidden away.

Nonetheless, Sununu said “whatever Pelosi knows, Obama knows” and that the idea of Newt as nominee must have the Democrats “laughing with glee behind closed doors.”
