Mitt Romney’s $12 million La Jolla teardown has long been a subject of mockery from his opponents this election cycle, but a Politico story revealing the extent of its luxury — a car elevator, its own lobbyist — is again thrusting the story into the news. Romney could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he had just checked in with recent endorser Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) first.

Back in August when the news of the house first broke, McCarthy warned that it would be trouble, telling a forum audience that quadrupling the size of Romney’s already swanky beach estate was a disastrous political move.

“He needs to stop staying in hotels and start staying with volunteers at every campaign stop,” McCarthy said at the time. “His job should be to take out the trash every day, and if that bag breaks, he needs to clean it up.”
