Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates was recovering at home Thursday after injuring his neck in a fall, CNN reported.

Gates, 70, accidentally fell and fractured his first vertebrae on New Year’s Day at his home in Washington state, according to a statement from his office obtained by CNN. He was resting at home after being treated at two hospitals, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Gates helmed the Pentagon during both former President George W. Bush’s and President Barack Obama’s administrations, from 2006 to 2011.
