Republican National Committee co-chair Sharon Day suggested on Monday that some Wisconsin voters just aren’t smart enough to vote Republican in the gubernatorial race.

“It’s not going to be an easy election, it’s a close election. Like I said, much closer than I can even understand why,” Day said during a rally with Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I don’t want to say anything about your Wisconsin voters but, some of them might not be as sharp as a knife.”

Day and Kleefisch both stressed that Republicans need to ramp up their get-out-the-vote efforts.

“Though we have one of the finest closing arguments in the United States of America, this election is still locked up in a dead heat,” Kleefisch said. “We need to make sure we turn out voters.”

Republican Gov. Scott Walker is running for re-election against Democrat Mary Burke in a close race. According to TPM’s Polltracker average, Walker only leads Burke by 0.4 points.
