RNC Chairman Reince Priebus sought to take some pressure off of Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan going into the VP debate on Thursday, saying that Vice President Joe Biden is a “gifted orator” and “very relatable,” in an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. At the same time, he played up Ryan’s intellect and seemed optimistic about how the debate would go for Republicans.

Priebus responded to a poll showing more Americans expect Paul Ryan to win in the upcoming debate: “Paul is a smart guy. He has committed his life to understanding the problems of our economy, presenting a plan for the American people. So I think that Paul, he’s gonna do a great job.”

Priebus continued: “But I also think it’s very important for people to understand, and I think people realize, that Joe Biden is a gifted orator, he’s very good at rhetoric and I think he’s very relatable. So, I think they’re two very different people and it’s gonna be a great night.”
