Rick Santorum is trying to score political points off of Newt Gingrich’s latest attempt to score political points.

Yesterday, Mitt Romney declined to meet Gingrich in a one on one “Lincoln-Douglas” style debate. Gingrich has made the format a highlight of his campaign (he promises to challenge President Obama to seven of them should he become the nominee) and he’s already scheduled a debate with Jon Huntsman. Gingrich and Herman Cain debated man to man earlier in the campaign.

After Romney declined, Santorum agreed to take his place, dinging Gingrich’s top rival for the nomination in the process.

From the Santorum campaign:

Friday evening during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record” with Greta Van Susteren, Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum accepted an offer to debate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in a “Lincoln-Douglas” style debate in Iowa.  The debate, organized by TheIowaRepublican.com, was organized after former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney refused to debate Gingrich in a Human Events/RedState debate in Washington, DC.
