New York Republicans are trying to convince Donald Trump to challenge Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) next year, according to The New York Post’s Fredric Dicker.
The Post reported on Monday that the effort is backed by state GOP Chairman Ed Cox, and that Republicans have been circulating a three-page memo detailing how Trump could beat Cuomo.
“In many respects, Trump is not considered a Republican — he is his own brand, an almost iconic figure of Rockefellerian proportions,” the memo states.
For his part, Trump told the Post he was “very flattered” by the idea, but that a gubernatorial run was “not something that I’ve ever even thought about.’’ Trump later followed up with the newspaper to offer an attack against Cuomo.
“He has the dumbest attorney general [Eric Schneiderman, who has filed a fraud suit against his Trump University] in the United States, who is driving business out of New York and his father, Mario, was one of the worst governors in the history of the state,” Trump told the Post.
