Capitol Fax, a top Illinois political site, is now reporting:

In a move that will surely stun the political establishment, sources say that Congressman Tim Johnson (R-Urbana) intends to drop out of his reelection race. I’m told by sources that the timing is “imminent” and there will likely be an announcement on Thursday.

Johnson’s seat leans Republican, though as Roll Call notes it was redrawn by the state’s Democratic legislature to become more competitive. The Democratic nomination appears to have been narrowly won in the recent primary by perennial candidate and physician David Gill, over the party establishment’s favored choice of Greene County State’s Attorney Matt Goetten
