The Federal Communications Commission will permit AT&T to withdraw its application for a merger with T-Mobile, avoiding a hearing on the current deal, according to the Wall Street Journal late Tuesday.

The withdrawal had been contested by advocacy groups opposed to the merger who wanted to testify against it, including Public Knowledge and Media Access Project. Those groups on Monday filed a letter of opposition with the FCC arguing that the agency should proceed with the hearing.

The FCC is holding a press conference at 4:15 ET to announce an update on the AT&T/T-Mobile merger review.
