Tom Donilion is stepping down as national security adviser and will be replaced by Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The move has been anticipated for some time. A report last month in Foreign Policy cited sources who said that Rice was next in line for the position, although the timing of the succession was unknown.
