Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday that 2016 Republican presidential candidates should “proceed with caution” when referring to Hispanics.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and many GOP hopefuls adopted the derogatory term “anchor baby” to describe a child who is granted citizenship because he or she was born in the US despite the status of his or her parents.
Jake Tapper, host of CNN’s “State of the Union,” asked Priebus if he was concerned if the language some candidates had used crossed the line and would cost Republicans the White House.
“Well, look, I have said many times, the way you communicate and tone is very important. And, sometimes, it’s not what you say, but it’s how you say it. I think all of our moms have — have told us that,” Priebus told Tapper.
“So, look, I think, at the end of the day, each candidate is going to be accountable for their own words and their own mouth,” he continued. “And so they should proceed with caution”
See: barn door, closing when horse is already out.
Yeah, Jack, that language definitely crossed the line; no hedging your question.
And sometimes it’s both. This is one of those times.
A not exactly eloquent but I’d bet heartfelt plea to return to the coded language and dog whistles that sufficed in the past.
Too late Motherfucker. Too late for that! You built that.
