Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has given Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) till 5 p.m. Tuesday to come up with a compromise with Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) on background check legislation, Politico reported. If no deal is reached, Reid will move ahead a current package of gun control legislation that several Republicans have vowed to filibuster.

Manchin is trying to convince Toomey — a former Pennsylvania House member and president of the Club for Growth — to sign onto a proposal that would require checks and records of sales in a commercial setting, including at gun shows and online. Private sales would not be covered.

Several parents of the victims from Sandy Hook will be on Capitol Hill today to meet with senators about gun legislation, including both Manchin and Toomey, according to Politico.
