The White House announced the hire of the first openly transgender member of its staff, the Washington Blade reported Tuesday.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan was appointed to the White House Office of Presidential Personnel as an outreach and recruitment director.

“Her commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this administration,” Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett told the Blade on Tuesday.
