A new Quinnipiac poll of Ohio out Wednesday morning shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney locked in a statistical dead heat with President Obama, the President slightly ahead 46 – 44. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum gets 41 percent to the Obama’s 47, which is outside the margin of error in the poll.

Romney continues to have favorability problems, which have been most visable in national numbers.

“For the first time, numerically more voters in Ohio view Romney unfavorably than favorably. His pattern in the earlier primary states has been to use his money advantage to run a large number of negative ads on his biggest challenger. But doing so now risks further increasing Romney’s own unfavorables as a side effect of throwing the mud himself. Yet, Romney may feel the need to raise questions about the lesser-known Santorum in the eyes of GOP voters,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in a release.

The TPM Poll Average of the Obama–Romney potential matchup in Ohio has been steady for over a year.
