A new national poll from Quinnipiac University shows a small lead for President Obama over likely GOP candidate Mitt Romney, by large divisions by demographics. Overall, Obama leads the matchup 46 – 42 percent, although Americans disapprove of his overall job performance and his handling of the economy.

“The gender gap remains, with Obama leading among women 49 – 39 percent and trailing slightly among men 46 – 43 percent,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in a release. “The racial gap is even wider: Romney leads 52 – 36 percent among whites, while the president is ahead among blacks 94 – 3 percent and among Hispanics 64 – 24 percent.”

The current TPM Poll Average of all public polling shows Romney with a small lead overall.
