As the country celebrates 17 years of reunification on Wednesday, some animosities between the formerly communist East and capitalist West remain and few are as doggedly contested as the fight over whose shepherds are superior. This isn’t your average dog shoots man story.

A Pensacola, Fla. man was shot Monday while trying to kill seven puppies, the Associated Press reported.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, told police he had decided to kill the 3-month-old shepherd-mix puppies because he couldn’t find them homes.

Bradford was holding one puppy in his arms and another in his left hand when one dog wriggled out of his grasp and placed its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver, according to the sheriff’s report. It was enough to fire the gun, shooting Bradford in the wrist. He was treated at a hospital for the injury.

Four of the puppies were found in good health and taken into custody by animal control, which plans put them up for adoption. Three of the puppies were found buried in a shallow grave at Bradford’s home, the sheriff’s office told AP.
