As the National Rifle Association engages in the conversation about the Newtown, Conn. shootings for the first time Friday, a group of progessives plans to be on hand to tell the NRA to stay out of the debate over gun regulations emerging in the days after the deadly attack on an elementary school.

CREDO, which organized a march on the NRA’s Washington, DC lobbying arm Monday, plans to deliver a petition with more than 207,000 signatures calling on the NRA to “stand down” in the aftermath of Newtown.

“The National Rifle Association is a powerful lobby that pretends to represent gun owners,” reads the peitition, which the group is hosting online. “But in reality, it represents the deadly interests of arms dealers and gun manufacturers.”

Activists from CREDO intend to deliver the petitions Friday to the Willard Hotel in downtown Washington, site of the NRA’s press conference, at around the same time the NRA presser is scheduled to begin. CREDO group plans to call on an NRA representive to meet them outside the press conference and accept the signatures.
