The progressive veterans group VoteVets.org launched an online ad campaign Tuesday, urging freshman Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) to support universal background check legislation.

The ad features Iraq War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient Glenn Kunkel, who argues that he had to undergo a background check in order to use an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in the military and that it makes sense that people should do the same in the United States. Kunkel fires the weapon at a dummy in the ad.

“I had to pass a background check to join the Marine Corps, before I could carry a weapon similar to this one in Iraq,” Kunkel says. “Here at home, anyone can purchase this weapon, no questions asked.”

Kunkel urges viewers to call Sen. Flake and ask him to support universal background check legislation. VotVets.org indicated in a press release that the online ad will target people interested in gun issues through social media and indicated they may expand the campaign to target other senators.
