Democracy for America activists pledged to make over 1 million phone calls against House Republicans in 2014 in order to punish them for causing the first federal government shutdown in 17 years, the group announced Friday.
The progressive political action committee, founded by former presidential candidate and Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean, has enlisted more than 9,100 members who have pledged to spend 33,300 hours for candidates endorsed by the group once the election heats up in 2014.
“House Republicans may think they have pleased their Tea Party base with the government shutdown, but they aren’t representing the majority of Americans and they will pay for it at the polls,” said DFA Chair Charles Chamberlain in a statement.
“So far, Democracy for America members have pledged more than 1 million volunteer phone calls to defeat House Republicans in 2014 in response to the shut down and that number will only continue to grow as the GOP continues their ridiculous temper tantrum,” he added.
A CBS News poll released Thursday confirmed, though not in overwhelming numbers, that more Americans blamed Republicans and — not Democrats — for the shutdown.
