The Respect for Marriage Coalition said Thursday that it was “sorry” that Laura Bush wishes to be removed from the group’s ad promoting marriage equality.
“We used public comments for this ad from American leaders who have expressed support for civil marriage,” a Coalition spokesperson said. “We appreciate Mrs. Bush’s previous comments but are sorry she didn’t want to be included in an ad. The ad launched a public education campaign that will now move to new and different voices that reflect the depth and breadth of our support.”
The ad showed a clip of the former first lady endorsing marriage equality during a 2010 interview on CNN. She is one of three prominent Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who appear in the ad.
The first ad will stop airing Friday and the group’s second ad, featuring a Republican former marine, will begin airing this weekend.
